Scientific Rationale

The IFAS9 school will bring together students from different horizons, expose them to high-level specialized lectures, and propose them to carry-on a six-days research project. The primary subject of the present school is IFU: 3D spectroscopy. The topics range from data-reduction techniques, data analysis and modelling. The school gives preference to doctoral students and to highly skilled and motivated master's students, without geographic restrictions.

IFAS9 is the ninth edition of a series of schools co-organized by the University of Lyon (CRAL, CNRS UMR5574, LIO) and IUCAA in Pune, India. The first, third and fifth editions were held in 2015, 2017, and 2019 in Pune on observational astronomy. The schools were hosted in Lyon in 2016, 2018, 2020 and now in 2024. In 2016 the school theme was modeling and simulations in astrophysics, and in 2018 and 2020 on 3D spectroscopy. These schools hosted participants from fourteen different nationalities.

The Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL) has been a pioneer in 3D, or integral field spectroscopy, and designed and assembled the MUSE spectrograph now in operation at the ESO's VLT. This is one of the largest and most advanced IFU spectrographs, and it has opened a new era of blind spectroscopic surveys, where, rather than targeting pre-selected sources, entire new classes of objects can be discovered out of deep fields. IUCAA is coordinating major efforts to develop theoretical and observational astronomy in India, including space-based astronomy, international projects, like the TMT, and gravitational waves, LIGO-India.

Lectures and hands-on data reduction tutorials will be given during the morning sessions, and research projects will be proposed to the participants, in smaller groups supported by a tutor. The school will be concluded by a presentation of the results of these projects.

Around 20 participants will be selected. The organizers may provide partial or full financial support to cover the school registration fee on demand and justification (note that we cannot cover travel expenses). Please contact the school organizers (ifas9@sciencesconf.org) to provide your justification in case you need financial support.

Registration

The registration fee of 750 euros include the full board accommodation and will be paid on site (either cash or international card payment) for the selected participants. The school can offer a discounted registration fee to those justifying it, subject to availability of funds.

The registration process is the following:

  1. Select "Registration" in the left-hand panel and fill the requested information
  2. Click to submit. The deadline is July 15th, 2024.
  3. You will receive a mail with a validation link. After validation you can connect again and change your details if needed.
  4. We will contact you personally no later than two weeks after the deadline to inform you of the outcome of the selection.

The organization of the school would not have been possible without the financial support of the LABEX Lyon Institute of Origins (ANR-10-LABX-0066) of the University Claude Bernard of Lyon (UCBL) within the program "Investissements d'Avenir" (ANR-11-IDEX-0007) of the French government operated by the National Research Agency (ANR). The school is also partly funded by the Scientific Council of the Observatory of Lyon, the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL), and by the Accueil Enseignants-chercheurs 2024 programme of the University of Lyon 1.
